Split in Half by Massive Explosion

Col. Robert E. Lee was at Old Fort Jackson before the war. He and several other U.S. Army officers were watching the test-firing of a large Columbiad seacoast gun. Suddenly it exploded with a thunderclap! As the story goes, a large piece flew over the officer`s heads before they had a chance to duck and landed 100 feet away in a swamp. Found, just a few years ago, is the piece in this photo which is on display at the fort. This is believed to be the piece that almost ended Lee's life and his service as a United States Army Officer.
