    11 Inch Dahlgren Shell Gun

Located just a few yards away from the wartime location of one of two huge imported seacoast guns from England, the 60,000 pound Blakely Rifle, this Federal smoothbore cannon was one of two such guns salvaged by Confederate volunteers under extremely difficult conditions. They snatched it from under the noses of the Federal blockading ship lookouts. The two 11 inch Dahlgren Shell Guns came from the experimental Federal Ironclad, USS Keokuk, which was holed by Brooke Rifles and large Columbiads during the Ironclad Attack of April 1863. Keokuk sank later that day in shallow water just off the Morris Island shore near the lighthouse, with her turret tops barely awash at low tide.
