View From the Parapet of Fort Morgan, Alabama

This is one of our favorite views from the lofty parapets of Ft. Morgan. It is in the direction of the southwestern bastion, the water battery with all those seacoast cannon, the hot shot furnace and the entrance to the main channel which ran within 150 yards of the shoreline very close to the fort in those days. In this view you can see, over the roof of the building on the right, exactly where the warship sqadron under Admiral Farragut attacked the southern and western barbette level guns and the water battery guns of Fort Morgan. THEY WERE VERY CLOSE! The lead ship USS Brooklyn was hit over 70 times before she could make Mobile Bay proper. This severe punishment was due to excellent Confederate gunnery and fatal hesitation on the Captain's part.
