Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River

Fort Donelson`s River Battery did quite well against the Federal Fleet, but the superior Union Army strength under General U.S. Grant helped to carry the day for the Federal troops. The fort was invested, and after three days and almost 4,000 casualties, General Buckner surrendered the fort on 16 February 1862. Grant`s forces were between 30 and 35 thousand and Buckner`s just 12 to 14 thousand.
