    Function of Upper Carriage Wheels

The upper carriage wheels at the front do not bear any weight when the gun is in battery or being fired. Only when returning the gun to battery after loading it do they bear weight when two roller handspikes lift the rear of the carriage up, causing the wheels to go down in front, to contact the iron track on the chassis. In this view you can also see the exterior friction-brake caliper and the brake actuating hand wheel.
