    The Rifling of the 150 Pdr. Armstrong Rifle

Finally a photo of the famous `shunt` rifling showing the angular 45 degree shunts in each rifling groove. These shunted the brass studs on the artillery shells from the deep loading grooves to the shallow firing grooves. The thing that looks like an aluminum pie plate at the photo`s center, is actually the flat, vertical bottom of the bore, resulting in a very unusual shaped chamber area into which the 35 pound powder charge is rammed.
