Seacoast Artillery Photo Gallery Vigorous Recoil Controlled by Two Sets of Counterhurters We calculated the recoil energy to be approximately 180 foot-pounds with a 400 grain charge of black powder and a 7 oz. bolt at 1225 feet per second. You really need well-made counterhurters,(compression brakes) to bring the upper carriage and tube to a stop. We set the force which will overcome the braking counterhurters at 120 lbs. with a large fish weighing scale and a padded hook to avoid rifling damage at the muzzle. The other set of counterhurters is located at the very end of the I-beam rails as an `ultimate stop` set.
