    Southwest Bastion Fort Morgan, Alabama

Mike walks across the dry moat or `ditch` toward the Hotshot Furnace which served the `Water-Battery` which covered the Main Channel into Mobile Bay from the Gulf of Mexico. Across the channel was Fort Gaines which was much farther from the Main Channel than Fort Morgan was. Note the embrasures in the bastion which were casemate positions for flank howitzers, usually 24 Pdrs. which could sweep the dry moat with canister to discourage a `coup de main` or quick assault to capture the fort.
